Objectives

  • To bring the LARA member community together by promoting a monthly outdoor POTA activation around the various Texas State Parks surrounding the DFW Metroplex area.
  • This activity also allows members that do not have HF stations or license privileges to operate on the HF bands to experience the different bands/modes by using the W5LVC call sign.
  • Main objective is to HAVE FUN, enjoy the outdoors, camaraderie and make QSOs in the process!

POTA Activation Plan - 2H 2026

2H 2026 Parks on the Air Activations

2H 2026 POTA Activation Schedule

Below is the list of the upcoming and/or completed W5LVC POTA activation dates, locations, status and blog:

2H 2026 ACTIVATIONS

July - completed

7/25

Ray Roberts Lake SP

As always, thank you for coming and participating!

It is July, so there is nothing new in the fact that it was a scorcher! Temps in the triple digits, as is normal...

We arrived at the park just past 10AM and found a nice unoccupied area with covered gazebo close to the boat ramp area. We had enough space around us to set up several antennas and all stations were in the shade and a nice breeze was flowing.

We ended up with several operators and family showing up: Brandon, Debbie, Steve, Rick, Colin, Sandra, Carlos, his dad, wife and daughter, David and Sam from DCARA also swung by. Great to have that many people!

With a total of 3 stations, 1 CW and 2 SSB, we had a great activation, with several people at the mike!

See you in August at Cedar Hill!

August -  completed

8/22

Cedar Hill SP

Another scorcher! The mercury hit the 105F mark while we were activating!

Thank you all who came out and participated! One has to be a little crazy to activate a park in this heat just for the fun of it!

We arrived at Cedar Hill SP at 10AM, started to set up at our usual spot, just past the day/swimming area. As we were setting up another group from a local area club was winding down their own operation (I guess they were a bit smarter and came in before the mercury hit the roof :-).

This time we had a great contingent of participants: Thank you Tom, Joe, Brandon, Greg, Mark, Sandra and Colin for coming and operating!

Each of us was able to achieve an activation! Congratulations all around!

With a total of 6 stations, 1 CW, 2 FT8 and 3 SSB, we had a great activation!

See you in September in the mountains of Palo Pinto! (that is going to be an ATNO activation for the club!) and... hopefully already a bit cooler!

September -  upcoming

9/19

Palo Pinto Mountains SP

October -  upcoming

10/17 - 10/18 overnight

Oklahoma - Hugo area expedition - 5 parks

November -  upcoming

December -  upcoming

12/19

Spring Creek FSP

PAST 1H 2026 ACTIVATIONS

February - completed

2/28

Spring Creek FSP

Thank you all who came and participated!

Joe, Edgar, Michael, Rick, Sandra, Colin! You all did great!

We had an awesome activation. The day was perfect, in the upper 70's, almost too warm for February... We set up two stations, Michael's FT710 for SSB and Colin's K2 for CW QRP. Both stations used vertical antennas with spread out radials. Easy to set up and tear down...

The result: over 50 QSO's in the log and a newly minted activator: Congrats Edgar for your very first successful activation. Well done!

Nest stop is Ray Roberts in March. See you there!

March - completed

3/21

Ray Roberts Lake SP

Now, this one was a different one...

We started a bit later, just after noon, since we all spent the morning at the Go-Kit Challenge event, which was great.

Getting to the park was an adventure by itself, since the date coincided with school's spring break and an additional collegiate bass fishing competition at the same time. Very little parking and almost zero sites available...

We set up in an unoccupied bench in the middle of a brushy area, since literally all other spots were taken. The spot was unprotected from the sun and no breeze coming thru...

With the limitations of that space, we decided to activate with only one 100W station and a vertical whip on 20m for both SSB and CW, rotating operators, so that we all could get a valid activation in the log.

Thank you Mark, Ron, Michael, Dave, Rick, Sandra and Colin for coming and making this a fun event!

The result: 51 Qs in the log, including several contacts with our brothers from LAARK that were so nice to call and work us.

Next stop is Cedar Hill in April. See you there!

April - completed

4/18 and 4/19

Cedar Hill SP

If there is one weekend in spring that you would like to see dry, it would be this one, but as the weather gods would dictate, we had a very wet Saturday... But despite the fact, LARA had a great activation. Jim and Brandon camped out there over the weekend, Greg, Colin , Debbie and Sandra came out on Saturday for a day activation.

We ended up putting 63 QSOs in the log in all 3 modes, SSB, CW, FT8, and activating the park on both, Saturday and Sunday! Well done team LARA!

We also had the chance to mingle with other operators from the Irving and Arlington clubs. The Irving club had reserved a pavilion on Saturday and invited us for dinner with delicious burgers and brats! Thank you so much!

Next stop is Ray Roberts in May. See you there!

May - completed

5/16

Ray Roberts Lake SP

This time the weather cooperated... but that is only half of the story...

The bands were very uncooperative, the solar A-index was a whooping 33!

Even so W5LVC got close to 40 Q's into the log!

We operated 20m taking turns at FT8, SSB and CW.

Thank you for all who showed up: Greg and Rhonda, Michael, Brandon, Colin.

There is not going to be an activation in June due to Summer FD, see you back at the next POTA in July!

June - N/A

-/-

Summer Field Day

No activation during June due to Summer Field Day activities.

See you at the park!
